Email Marketing and Software Glossary

A

Auto responder: automated email message which can be activated by new subscription, unsubscription etc.

Attachment: a file attached to the email. Which otherwise is not possible to send.

Bounces: when bulk email is send it doesn't get delivered to few of the specified addresses.

Broadcasting Email Software: a software which aids the user to send mass email.

Blacklist: URL that consists of the list for blocked IP addresses that spread Spam.

BCC: Blind Carbon Copy. This enable the option to hide the list of email addresses where a message is sent.

Bulk Email Software: A program which is used to send same message to multiple recipients.

C

Click Through Rate: a figure which shows the rate of the clicks made by the receivers who received email newsletter. Figure is usually provided by email tracing software.

CC: Carbon Copy, an option provided to the user to send email message to multiple receivers.

D

Double Opt-In: It allows the user to ask people or subscription of the email newsletter.

Delivery Tracking: provided the user with the estimation for the email received. The ratio is for the message received per total number of email sent.

Discussion List: The email service, which allows the user to send individual messages to all the members of the group.

Domain Name: the name assigned to the IP address.

DART mail: the marketing application for planning, execution and analysis for email campaigns.

Email: a mail sent via electronic media.

Email Marketing: marketing done through electronic media.

Email Client: software used for organizing email.

Ezine: electronic magazine.

Forward: an option to send the received email to other users.

Hard Bounce: a message which can't be delivered because of invalid address.

HTML: Hypertext Markup Language, language used for publishing in World Wide Web.

In House list: the list of contacts for people one knows.

IMAP, IMAP4: internet Message Access protocol. Is saves the message and provides access to that message at server.

ISP: Internet service provider.

List Owner: owner of the opt in bulk email list for rent.

List Manager: a person who works as manager to the list owner.

List Broker: an intermediary person for the list rental.

Mail Bomb: sending more mails then a server can handle resulting the sever crash down.

Mailing list: list for the email addresses intended to use bulk email campaigns.

Multi Part Mime: a message contain both versions for displaying, HTML and Text version.

Newsletter: a message containing news and useful data to a list of subscribers.

Opt-In: permission for email.

Opt-out: the denial of the email request.

Open Rate: the number of the receivers which open the marketing message.

Permission Email: synonym for Opt-In.

Personalized Email: A personal approach email towards receiver.

Plain Text: not formatted text.

POP, POP3: a protocol which manages incoming email.

Registration: the action to fill the form for subscription.

Recipient: an email address that receive the sent email.

SMTP: the protocol used to send email between two servers.

Soft Bounce; the bouncing back of the email because of temporary problems with the receiver's server.

Solo Mailing: one time email send to subscribers.

Spam: unsolicited commercial email.

Subscriber, Subscription: the person who accepts to receive newsletter. Acceptance is termed as subscription.

Targeted Bulk Email Campaign: a mass email marketing campaign applied to permission list.

Tracking: features which allows the tracking of the receiver's action.

Untargeted Bulk Email Campaign: Spam

Unsubscribe unsubscription: a person who request for no more receiving of marketing messages.

Unsolicited Commercial Email: Spam

Web Based: a Software application, database or any other kind of information hosted online.

Web Mail: web based email client.
